Abstract

The entire treasure of Vedic literature contains religious philosophies, ideas and moral principles. The basic aim of education was the propagation of those ideas, the ultimate aim however being the realization of the True knowledge and the Absolute. A study of the ancient scriptures of the Vedic, post.-Vedic and the Buddhist periods reveals that the development of character and personality of the learners was an essential object of education in ancient India. The preachers of the time paid adequate attention to inculcate values along with the mental uprightness. During Buddhist period also, education was value-oriented; the pupils were required development and observance of strict code of moral conduct and discipline. It is relevant to mention that the education system in the Buddhist period in India was liberal, democratic and free from communal narrowness unlike Hindu system of education.
